They will develop real-life skills of learning to clearly communicate their thoughts by ordering them in a comprehensive way.

Meet the Teachers

Hi! My name is Eva, and I am currently a sophomore at Valley Christian High School.
I enjoy writing short stories in my free time, mostly nonfiction based on my own life and
my experiences, such as my travels and
reflecting on what I’ve seen.
In 2023, I won the Scholastic Writing Silver Key, and recently in 2024 I was a finalist in the Narrative Short Story High School Contest. I have also tutored elementary and junior high kids on reading comprehension and writing.

Hi!! My name is Dana, and I’m a sophomore at Valley Christian High School. I write short stories and fiction for SJPL short edition writing.
My passion is creative and informational writing In 2022, I won the Scholastic Writing Gold Key and an honorable mention in 2023.
I have TA’ed as a grammar and essay tutor, and I'm so excited to see and teach a new group of people this year!!

  • Intro to different types of writing (Eva)

    • Common grammar mistakes not to make

    • “Drank? Drunk?” teach students the difference of the different tenses (refresh their minds)

  • Research tips (Eva)

    • Organize notes

  • Give students a list of informational prompts to choose from

    • Brainstorm ideas

  • Start working on 1st draft 

  • Recap lesson

 

Week 2:

  • Warmup short writing assignment

  • Writing a Thesis/intro (Dana)

  • Transitions (Eva)

    • Develop a wider bank of transition elements

    • How to seamlessly incorporate transition elements

  • Continue working on 1st draft

Week 3:

  • Warmup short writing assignment

  • Conclusion (Eva)

  • Efficient editing tips (Dana)

    • Editing checklist

  • Edit 1st draft and finish final draft

  • Genres of creative writing (Dana)

  • Brainstorm ideas for creative writing

    • Draft a rough outline

Week 4:

  • Develop creative writing piece using their outline

Week 5:

  • Warmup short writing assignment

  • Use of dialogue (Dana)

  • Mood vs Tone (Eva)

  • Finish 1st draft

    • Use feedback to adjust writing

  • Finish creative writing final draft

Week 6:

  • “Author’s chair” session where students get to read their work out loud
